WPD’s very first Junior Academy will be held in three complete sessions on these Saturdays in 2018 – April 21, July 21, and September 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Junior Academy is for children ages 5-8 that live in the City of Winchester and surrounding areas. Sessions will take children through age-appropriate activities that mimic police officers’ activities, including:
- Obstacle course (training)
- Tour of building
- Mock briefing before a shift
- Dispatching a call
- Solving a crime (dusting for fingerprints)
- Animal control (education and activity)
2018 REGISTRATION IS NOW FULL! Check back next spring for the 2019 sessions.
Session sizes are limited to 16 participants. A waiting list will be established for any registrants who apply but do not fit in any particular session – for example, the 17th applicant for the April 21 session may be placed into the July 21 session; the 49th applicant may be placed onto a waiting list for any of the sessions if a spot opens or receive the first spot in the April 2019 session.
Spots in the Academy will be opened to applicants in the City of Winchester before being opened to applicants outside city limits.
PLEASE NOTE: PARTICIPATING CHILDREN MUST BE POTTY TRAINED. If your child is not potty trained, please do NOT register for the Junior Academy.
Sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Timbrook Public Safety Center, located at 231 E.Piccadilly Street in Winchester, VA, 22601. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. to allow enough time for participant check in. Parents are asked to drop off their children and return at 12:00 p.m. to enjoy an Academy graduation ceremony in which children will receive a badge and take a special oath. Refreshments will be provided.
Sessions will be held rain or shine. Due to security reasons, parents will not be permitted to stay with their children after drop-off/registration until 12:00 p.m.
